The thick canvas stays in place, so you don’t need to tape it, and you can use it to cover any surface. Plastic drop cloths are slippery to walk on or set a ladder on and don’t stay in place. Even worse, paint spills on plastic stay wet, and they can end up on your shoes and get tracked through the house.  Canvas is slippery on hard floors, so rosin paper is better over vinyl, tile and hardwood. Tape the sheets together and to the floor to provide a nonslip surface.

Deciding which paint to use has gotten much easier now that acrylic latexes have pushed oil-based paints almost to extinction. The acrylics offer superior performance (they don't harden with age, the way oils do, so they move and breathe without blistering), they don't mildew as readily, and they emit fewer VOCs, so they comply with new air-quality regulations. They also work over both oil- and water-based primers.

Start with an exterior house wash. It is important that you spend some time washing the dirt and grime off the exterior of your house before you start painting. If the exterior surface of your house is free of paint-repelling soil, the primer and paint will adhere better, making the paint last longer. Most of the time, a simple wash with a hose, a pump sprayer and a scrub brush is sufficient, but if you decide that you would prefer a professional to help you, a power washer in the hands of a professional can provide a superior clean.[1]

Exterior paint also needs a dry surface for an even coat and proper adherence. Unfortunately, moisture isn’t a problem in Texas right now. If a fluke rain storm does occur, it’s best to wait at least one full day before painting. Your professional painting company can discuss your exterior paint job to help you understand when is the optimal time for repainting.
Start at the top of your house and work your way down. This serves two purposes. First, it allows you go down the ladder instead of up as you work, preventing potentially life threatening falls. Also, when prepping/scraping the paint off, you will have debris falling on the bottom areas that you just painted. Second, painting from top to bottom prevents messy drips and missed spots. Ideally, you should also start painting from the left side and work your way right because you are more likely to see any missed spots.[8]
Painting the enterior of your own house is fun. Especially when you're doing it with other family members together. But it's also important to follow the standard methods to ensure quality painting with soothing aesthetics. Our painting and remodeling crew from Arlington, TX can insure the basic rules of enterior painting are followed and make sure your house not only looks better but will last for years to come. Following are some basic principals to follow should you decide to tackle the job on your own.
Caulk and seal any windows or openings to prevent air and water from leaking in. This may be the most important part of the prepping process. It's important to have a well-maintained, beautified, non-rotting wood house, but it's just as important to make sure that the windows, cracks and openings aren't leaking air or letting in water, which can ruin the interior of your house. Depending on the severity of the deterioration, you can even resort to using a heavy duty, professional grade, industrial caulking.[6]

#1 You should pay attention to preparing the surfaces first making sure repairs take place prior to painting. It's not the fun part of the task, rather it's the most important part of painting. If you fail to prepare the surface, no matter how exclusive painting material you're using, it'll fail. Make sure there is no peeling paint left on wood and use the proper caulk for cracks along the trimwork and other small holes.
When the primer is dry, caulk all small joints (less than ¼-inch-wide) in the siding and trim. Most pros use siliconized acrylics—paint won't stick to straight silicones—but Guertin and O'Neil like the new, more expensive urethane acrylics for their greater flexibility and longevity. O'Neil stresses that it's shortsighted to skimp on caulk. "If the joint fails, you're back to square one." Guertin uses the lifetime rating as his quality guide. "I don't expect 35-year caulk will last 35 years, but it should last longer than a 15-year caulk."
